These are all 2,979 earthquakes that India’s National Center for Seismology recorded and reviewed in and around the country over one year, from 3 November 2025 to 2 November 2026. 1,317 were inside India. 837 were magnitude 4 or more, the size that is often felt near the epicentre. The quakes trace the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates: along the Himalaya, through the North-East, down into Myanmar, and across to the Hindu Kush. Switch to Deep (70 km+). Of the 734 quakes that deep, 245 were in Afghanistan and 217 in Myanmar. India’s largest was one of these deep ones: a magnitude 5.7 under Leh, Ladakh on 19 January, 171 km down.

The biggest of the year was a magnitude 7.0 in Tibet on 22 October. Over the next 11 days, NCS logged 59 more quakes within 150 km of it, and 52 of the 60 were magnitude 4 or more. October was the busiest month of the year, with 382 events.

The state with the most quakes was Maharashtra (167), ahead of Sikkim (164) and Assam (157). Almost all of Maharashtra’s were small: only 5 reached magnitude 4. Small quakes are recorded where sensors are close by, so the typical quake recorded inside India was magnitude 2.9, against 3.9 outside it.
